Back to School! Back to the Gym! Back in Shape!

Back to SchoolBack to School!

Are you ready for a new school year?  Is it time for a regular routine?  The past summer months with the intense heat have kept many from enjoying the outdoors and staying in shape.  While not a reported  record summer for temperatures according to the experts, the constant heat has been a problem for everyone.  You dedicated the summer to entertaining the kids, driving to and from the pool, camp, and play dates.  Now, school is back in session –  you are ready to take quality time for youself.

Back to the Gym!

Now is the time to join a facility in your area or check out local churches for centers available to the community.  Here are some tips for getting back to the gym!

  • Get up Early – Most of the fitness centers and gyms open early.  Find an early morning class or complete your workout before the kids go to school.   If the kids have early morning start times – make a point to go straight to your fitness center and complete your exercise routine.
  • Make it Convenient – Driving through major traffic or over 30 minutes to your fitness center might decrease your chances of sticking with a workout program.  The convenience factor is essential so locate a center that is close to your home or to your place of business.
  • Use your Membership – Do you already belong to a center?  Then USE it!  Make the first weeks of September your commitment to work out.  Ask the trainers to place you on an appropriate plan that you can stick with and will work with your schedule.

Back in Shape!

No time for the gym?  Still dedicating your life to someone else?  Here are a few tips for thinking outside the gym.

  • Work It – While you Watch– Try not to be a total couch potato while in front of the TV.  Take advantage of commercials and move.  See how many sit-ups, push-up, crunches or jumping  jacks you can do during the break.  I would be willing to bet you will have competition by the end of the first sitcom.
  • Get On the Ball – Sit on one of the large inflatable stability balls while watching TV.  This will help improve your balance and posture and work abdominal muscles.  An elementary school in Southaven, MS is using these stability balls in the classroom.  Instead of slouching in a hard chair, these kids are sitting on stability balls and exercising their bodies as well as their minds.  A plus for the school, a start with the childhood obesity problem, and a star for the state of Mississippi.
  • Squeeze a Workout In – Use the time drying your hair or waiting for the microwave to finish to squeeze in some exercises.  According to two D.C. fitness experts, you can be on your way to toned thighs in 10 minutes.  Do two sets of 12 repetitions of squats during the time you are drying your hair.  Do the same number of counter push ups sets and repetitions while waiting for your coffee to heat.  You can check out this fitness information in the newest  Southern Living which helps busy Moms to stay in shape.
